The “first look” session is a special and intimate moment between the couple before the wedding ceremony and has become popular to do it weeks before the actual wedding- I’ll be going over some tips in this blog post about it. This is of course completely up to the couple! Some couples decide to save the first look for the wedding day and do a bridal session beforehand with just the bride, or a couples bridal shoot after the wedding. (Which doing it after is actually pretty fun because you can get a little more messy if you want:))
Here are some tips on making your first look session a special moment!
Choose a meaningful location: Select a location that holds significance for your relationship, such as where you had your first date, got engaged, or a place that holds cherished memories. The sentimental value will enhance the moment.
Personalize the setting: Decorate the first look location with elements that reflect your relationship. Consider incorporating meaningful items, such as photos, love notes, or items that symbolize your journey together.
Plan a surprise: Surprise your partner with a heartfelt gesture during the first look. It could be a special gift, a handwritten letter, or a small token that holds sentimental value. The element of surprise will make the moment even more memorable. I’ve seen some couples do personal vows after the first look and that’s so precious! Definitely down to do that for anyone who doesn’t plan on doing public vows on their wedding day.
Add music: Choose a song or musical piece that is significant to your relationship and have it playing softly in the background during the first look. The music will create a romantic ambiance and add an emotional layer to the moment. If you have a song you want me to play during the first look, reach out and I’ll bring my speaker! It always helps you feel more comfortable too if you feel awkward in front of the camera.
Create a sense of anticipation: Build anticipation and excitement leading up to the first look. You can exchange brief messages or engage in a small ritual to heighten the anticipation, such as closing your eyes and taking a deep breath before turning around to see each other. I’ll definitely help in this teasing process. It kind of makes me happy to see the groom get so anxious haha.
Have a private moment: Ensure that the first look is an intimate and private experience. Arrange for your photographer and any other participants to maintain a respectful distance, allowing you to focus solely on each other without distractions.
Embrace your emotions: Let your emotions flow freely during the first look. Whether it’s tears of joy, laughter, or overwhelming happiness, allow yourselves to fully experience and express your feelings. Embracing and sharing your emotions will make the moment authentic and memorable.
Take your time: Don’t rush through the first look. Take your time to embrace, hold each other, and take in the moment. It’s a chance for you both to connect and share your excitement before the whirlwind of the wedding day. I usually give my couples a few minutes to just be excited with each other! Most couples I think forget that I’m even there; it’s just a really special moment.
Hire a professional photographer: A skilled photographer will capture the essence and emotion of the first look, allowing you to relive the moment through beautiful photographs. Research and select a photographer who understands your vision and can capture the intimacy and authenticity of the moment! If you resonate with my style, feel free to reach out in my contact form!
Remember, the most important aspect of the first look is the connection and love you share with your partner. Embrace the moment, be present, and enjoy this special time together before saying “I do.”
