What to Wear for Engagements- Rachel & Carson

Don’t worry about to wear for Engagements- this post is for you if you are! Engagement photos are so fun because you make it be casual, formal, and really whatever you want just be the way you end up dressing for your engagements! But don’t stress, this is all fun business and you don’t have to pick just one. For my engagement sessions, I generally suggest bringing 1-2 outfits, but some couples like to bring 3. It’s totally up to you, whether you want to take time up to change, which can take away from light if you want to do a lot of outfits. My personal preference for shoots like these is to bring two outfits- one formal, and one casual.

For your formal outfit, it doesn’t have to be fancy. Maybe bring one of your favorite summer dresses and sandals you love, while the guy wears a button up shirt. You could take it a level up and get a gown and a suit, but this all depends on who you are as a person and a couple. You should always dress in what makes you feel beautiful and what makes you feel comfortable! No need to go buy anything new.

Here are some outfit inspiration ideas for a couple’s engagement shoot:

1. Dressy casual: For a classic and timeless look, you can both wear dressy casual outfits. Men can wear a nice button-down shirt with slacks or jeans and dress shoes, while women can wear a flowy dress or skirt with a blouse and heels. Neutral colors such as white, black, navy, or beige work well for this look.
2. Complementary colors: Choose complementary colors that work well together, such as navy and blush, burgundy and cream, or gray and dusty blue. This will create a cohesive look between you and your partner without being too matchy-matchy.
3. Coordinated patterns: If you both love patterns, you can coordinate by wearing different patterns that complement each other. For example, one person can wear a striped shirt while the other wears a floral dress in a similar color scheme. However I wouldn’t suggest wearing really thin stripes- they don’t show up well in photos. If you want to go the pattern route, I suggest wearing timeless or subtle patterns rather than trendy, bold patterns.
4. Formal attire: If you want to go all-out, consider wearing formal attire for your engagement shoot. Men can wear a suit and tie, while women can wear a cocktail dress or gown. This is a great option if you want a more dramatic and elegant look.
5. Casual and comfortable: If you prefer a more laid-back and casual vibe, wear comfortable clothes that represent your personalities. You can wear your favorite pair of jeans, a graphic tee, and sneakers, while your partner can wear a cute sundress or shorts with a tee or tank top.
